Calling on the community to fight cancer

This year, the Purnong District Hall is hosting their seventh Longest Table and is calling on the community to help them Bite to Fight against cancer.

The group have organised a Christmas in July themed dinner for their sold-out event on Saturday 31 July, expecting 75 guests in attendance!

Organiser Geoff Barber said he’s looking forward to getting the community together for a great night while raising funds for cancer research.

“One of our organisers loves Christmas, so she’s very excited about decorating our hall; because we are mainly a farming community, not everyone gets to celebrate Christmas due to work commitments,” Geoff said.

“We will be having a traditional Christmas 3-course meal of vegetable soup, roast turkey and lamb with some veggies and a Christmas pudding for dessert.”

Attendees will also be treated to guest speaker and ABC Radio Host Peter Goers and can try their luck at the raffles, silent and live auctions and games on the night.

“Aside from the raffles and auctions, we will be asking people to make a donation for their meal. We don’t have a set price as we don’t want to exclude anyone and we find most people are very generous anyway,” Geoff said.

“Cancer doesn’t discriminate on age or gender. I know women in their 20’s and 70’s who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully both these women had successful treatment; one of our previous male guests also suffered breast cancer,” Geoff said.

“Whatever we raise we know will go towards saving lives. Although it seems so far away now, a future free from cancer would mean so much to so many families.

“The more money we raise, the closer we are to helping find cures.”
